Ideas for Teaching Children

Repentance brings joy.

  • To teach about the joy of repentance, maybe you could let your children get their hands sticky or dirty and notice how they feel after washing. Then you could compare that to the way the people in Mosiah 4:1–3 felt before and after their sins were forgiven. Share your testimony of the Savior’s power to cleanse us spiritually.

A tiny dot on the palm of each hand, and have them rub their hands together.

For those of you concerned about your littles, not doing well with the activity of getting sticky. I have a back up plan.

Read the directions on the picture.

Do your children know how to fully and sincerely repent? Help them find what King Benjamin’s people did in Mosiah 4:1–3, 10.

For younger students. The scriptures Mosiah 4:1–3, 10 actually move through these steps. If you are familiar enough with the scriptures you can teach this more smoothly.

I got this dry erase board at Dollar Tree, but you could also use little chalk boards, or even attach to pencils.

Mother's Day is Sunday May 12th.

For older students:

  • They could also review “Repent, Repentance” in Guide to the Scriptures. How does Jesus Christ make repentance possible?

These are only suggestions, go by your own inspiration. Also good to point out that reading your scriptures, praying and following the Holy Ghost is a form or repentance. While some repentance needs to be taken up with the bishop, it's not a terrible thing. It's a privilege and a gift.

The gospel of Jesus Christ inspires me to treat others with love and kindness.

  • Serving others makes us feel good. Perhaps your children could talk about a time when they loved or served someone and how that experience made them feel. What are some reasons people might not want to serve others? What could we say to someone to invite them to help people in need? Look for ideas in Mosiah 4:16–26.

You can start with the small heart and then as the children put the puzzles together talking about each service. Point out how the heart grew bigger as our love for others grows bigger.

  • King Benjamin taught that when we come unto Christ and receive a remission of our sins, we are “filled with the love of God” (Mosiah 4:12). This leads us to be loving and kind toward others. You and your children could search Mosiah 4:13–16, 26 (or a song like “I’ll Walk with You,”

  • Children’s Songbook, 140–41) and find phrases that describe how we can serve others. They could then act out these things or draw pictures of them and guess each other’s phrases. How can we show love and kindness at home, at school, or at church?

As I make covenants with God, I take upon myself the name of Christ.

  • Your children might enjoy creating badges displaying the name “Jesus Christ” and wearing them over their hearts (see this week’s activity page). While they do so, you could read to them Mosiah 5:12 and talk about how making covenants, or promises, with God is like having the name of Christ “written always in [our] hearts.”

4 years ago we were in the beginning of the covid pandemic. I was a primary teacher to a senior primary class. I made videos for my class to watch and added them to my blog. You are welcome to watch them, but keep in mind. I couldn't ask questions, or interact which is a big part of effective teaching. This is lecturing, which I hate, but it all we had):

If you decide to do the Heavenly Father web activity, have your students look up, read the scriptures, draw their own pictures, and give their insight with the help of your questions. Most of all go by your inspiration and prayers. This also has the little lesson about writing names on things, so they can be returned to us, which goes along with Mosiah 5:5-15.

This is very similar to my Youth lesson.
