Come Follow Me LDS Youth lesson, Young Men and Young Women, Free Puzzle, July 21-27 youth lesson helps

Commandments are evidence of God’s love for us.

If you or someone you know has ever wondered why the Lord gives so many commandments, Doctrine and Covenants 82:8–10 could help. Which insights from these verses could help you explain to someone why you choose to follow the Lord’s commandments? What could you compare the commandments to that might help? You could find additional insights in Doctrine and Covenants 1:37–38; 130:20–21 and the video “Blessed and Happy Are Those Who Keep the Commandments of God” (Gospel Library). What experiences have taught you to see commandments as blessings?

Think about some of the commandments God has given you. What have these commandments taught you about Him and His will? (see verse 8). How has your life been affected by keeping these commandments?

What do you learn about the Lord from verse 10? What do you think it means for the Lord to be “bound”? (see also verse 15).

I am giving away a free puzzle this week that covers this material. I did not include questions or scriptures on every piece, but I hope you can use it to facilitate a discussion and still have time for the game (in my store). Go fast, because the game is really fun. Pass out the pieces, help the youth find their scriptures, and answer the questions. If a youth gets a piece without any directions, tell them to help a friend.

It looks like this, when it's completed:

How has the Lord kept His promises in your life? What might you say to someone who doesn’t feel motivated to keep the commandments because they haven’t received the blessings they hoped for? Do you find any helpful insights in Elder D. Todd Christofferson’s message “Our Relationship with God”? (Liahona, May 2022, 78–80).

See also Topics and Questions, “Commandments,” Gospel Library.

My store is at the bottom of the page.

The game encompasses a wide variety of games (Charades, Pictionary, Taboo, and Heads Up). I call it Charheadboonary(: The youth will get a card that looks like this:

There are 7 cards on each sheet of paper (2 pages), as you can see, additional questions are next to the cards. If you think you would like to use those, print two of each sheet, one on card stock and one on plain paper. Cut out the cards with the card stock and read from the additional paper during your lesson.

Make sure you tell the youth not to forget to answer their question in their excitement.

If you want to help the game progress faster and have students who are unfamiliar with the commandments, you can place these cards (in the lesson bundle) on the board so the youth can refer to them as they try to guess. You can remove the cards as they guess if you would like to make it easier for a younger class.

If you do that, your board will look like this:

Save room on your board for Pictionary, so the youth can still draw. Bring chalk or markers for that.

If you get into the game and they are guessing them too easily, you can always remove the cards from the board.

I recommend giving everyone 15-30 seconds (set a timer) to respond. Or else this could take forever. It will also keep them engaged.

I think it would be fitting to conclude with this reminder that the primary reason for keeping the commandments is love for God. Close with your testimony.

This is a free print.

BTW, our church has more than ten commandments, like "obey the word of wisdom" and "Keep the law of tithing." I've included those; you can remove those if you'd like.

This is already included in the lesson bundle, but you can purchase it separately here if you prefer.
