Ideas for Teaching Children

God gathers us to bless us.

Movement is so important.

1. Put these flags around the room. I don't have every flag; if a child knows their lineage, and you don't have the flag, have them make their own. The majority of the early saints came from England/ Wales, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. So, I'm going to stick to the history.

Some Saints were already in America traveling from Fayette.

  1. Hand out papers that look like this:

  1. Have the students draw themselves as if they were saints of the early church.

  2. Then, have them choose which country they came from. Have them go stand by their flag. Tell them that they are going to gather in Ohio (Show them where it is taped on the board).

  1. You can read the scriptures now or at the end.  Have them act these things out as their Saints move closer to Ohio......" some of them will have to go through some really hard things to get to Ohio. Crossing rivers, walking for a very long time. Some will have to walk in the very cold weather, and some will have to walk in the rain. Some will have to come by boat and sell everything they own to gather with the Saints. Continue until they can tape their saint on the board next to Ohio."

Why do you think it was so important for the Saints to gather? How does God as us to gather today?

If you would like to, you can add this object lesson:

Here is a video they can watch.

For older students:

This coloring/activity book covers the entire April 27 lesson.

This video shows how to assemble the coloring book:

God wants us to “be one.”

  • As you read Doctrine and Covenants 38:24–25 with your children, talk about what it means to esteem your brother or sister as yourself (see also Matthew 7:12). Help them repeat the scripture, replacing “his brother” with each other’s names.

Here are some finger puppets that can help teach this.

  • To teach your children what it means to “be one” (Doctrine and Covenants 38:27), you could help them draw a large number 1 and decorate it with names and drawings or pictures of each person in your family or class. Next to the 1, you could write things you will do to be more united.

Each child can have their own.

  • Consider sharing an object lesson that illustrates how things can be combined or united to become one, such as pieces of cloth that make one quilt or ingredients that make one loaf of bread. What do these examples teach us about becoming one as God’s people?

This is an adorable story about some baking ingredients that, despite their difference, come together to make cookies.

Mitzi at comefollowmekid.com came up with this fun idea and has it available on her website, along with pictures of her kids and the different activities they did this week. It's so cute!

If I am prepared, I don’t need to be afraid.

  • As you read together Doctrine and Covenants 38:30, you and your children could talk about recent experiences that required preparation. Then you could ask your children about things Heavenly Father wants us to prepare for. Share with your children an experience in which being prepared helped you not be fearful. You could also watch together the video “Men’s Hearts Shall Fail Them” (Gospel Library).

There are two ways to teach this activity.

1. Assemble the preparedness kit and have all the pieces over the top of the pictures. Show the children your kit and ask them what they think; they may have kits similar to this one but with real items. Show them how the pieces have words on them, tell them it is a scripture. Read it together a couple of times. Then give each of the child/ren a turn to remove a piece. Talk about the picture that is revealed and how those things can help us prepare or how we can prepare for those things. Try saying the scripture together, with all the pieces gone, or a few pieces left. Bear your testimony that God warns us to be prepared because he loves us.

2. Same as 1, but instead of having the pieces already over the top of the pictures, have them hiding in different places in the room. Open your kit and talk about the different pictures. Tell them that God wants us to prepare for these things or use these things to prepare to live with him again. Tell them that there are pieces hiding that need to go in your kit ask them if they will help you find them. Point out that there are words on the items, like a secret message. After each word is found, read the message and see if the kids can figure out what it means. When the message is complete, tell them it is a scripture in D&C 38:30. What does God want us to know or learn from this scripture? Read the scripture together a couple of times. Bear your testimony.

This is in my store.

I receive the gift of the Holy Ghost when I am confirmed.

  • Consider showing a picture of someone being confirmed. Ask your children to describe what’s happening in the picture. You could also invite them to point to the picture whenever they hear the words Holy Ghost in Doctrine and Covenants 39:6, 23 (or in a song like “The Holy Ghost,” Children’s Songbook, 105). Share with each other how the gift of the Holy Ghost has blessed you.
