The Old Testament testifies of Jesus Christ.

One way to find rich spiritual nourishment in the Old Testament is to look for the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ (see John 6:48). For example, how do you see the Savior in the following?

What do these examples teach about Him? What other references to Jesus Christ in the Old Testament are you already familiar with?

In his message “Jesus Christ Is the Treasure,” Elder Dale G. Renlund encouraged us to “remember and always focus on Jesus Christ” (Liahona, Nov. 2023, 98). Consider reading his message, looking for things you can do to find Jesus Christ not only in the Old Testament but also in your life.

See also “Types or Symbols of Christ” in Guide to the Scriptures, “Jesus Christ,” Gospel Library; “Seek the Lord Early,” Children’s Songbook, 108.

This is such a fun, interactive, and insightful lesson.

I would start out with passing around this printable:

With the background that we will be learning about the symbols of Christ. Something that appears in the everyday lives of people in the Bible. Every day they ate bread...why is Christ called the "Bread of Life"? Every family cared for sheep...why was Christ the "Sacrificial lamb"?

What symbols do we see in everyday experiences TODAY where Christ wants us to think about him? How is Christ showing up in the repetitive daily experiences?

This is a free Print.

After you have given them a minute to record their thoughts, ask if anyone would be willing to share.

Here is another Free Print. A quote from  “Jesus Christ Is the Treasure,” Elder Dale G. Renlund.

Follow up with questions like these:

-Why do you think it’s sometimes easier to search far away than to look inward?

-What are some small, everyday places where Christ might already be present in your life?

-How can remembering that Christ is already near give us hope when we feel stuck or discouraged?

-What simple habit could help you recognize Christ more frequently each day?

Today, you will learn about individuals in the scriptures who choose not to see Christ or accept his offering. How might we be guilty of that? What are some things that get in the way of us noticing when Christ shows up?

Next, you will distribute packets to 4 groups of students. These packets are in my store; you can click on the images at the top or bottom of the page.

 A talk show interview

A gallery wall (Don't forget art supplies for this)

A freeze-frame pose with Inner Monologue (a spoken inner thought of a character).

 A social-media style recap

Each kit will give them an outline of what they are presenting to the class. Here is a sample of one kit from the Manna/Talk Show interview.

Please give them a couple of minutes to read the material and plan their approach. Be available to assist them. If you are concerned about time, you can omit elements, such as interviewing only Moses rather than the Israelites. If you want to complete all activities and have fewer than 8 students (two students per group), form two groups and complete the other activities together as a class. They are all so different; it's not like you are asking them to do the same thing, and the last group (Jonah, social media) is really quick and easy; it would go really fast altogether.

If you have a large class, then sit back and let them teach the lesson(:

After each group is done, I have recommended questions you (the teacher) can ask the class. They are titled "Questions to ponder," also in the lesson bundle. Don't distribute these with the other materials; they are intended to facilitate discussion after each group is done.

-Be mindful of time; set a time limit for each group. If they finish early, allocate additional time to discuss the principles or scriptures.

Good luck with your lesson!
